The MIND-PLAY basketball therapy program for adolescents with autism at the Min Yoongi Center, Severance Hospital, was developed from KASEC’s DRIB (Developing Relationships in Inclusive Basketball) US-based model.

In a recent study published in Research in Autism, KASEC provided evidence that its inclusive basketball program can enhance social skills and promote the physical and emotional well-being of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. With research support from the Organization for Autism Research, KASEC also developed the DRIB Manual and Toolkit to facilitate the broader implementation of the model.

KASEC’s contribution went beyond sharing the program. We provided training and guidance to the Severance team, who thoughtfully adapted the model to match Korea’s healthcare system. This partnership is a meaningful example of how organizations can learn from one another, share expertise, and work together across borders to create innovative programs that benefit individuals with developmental disabilities.

We are also grateful for the vision and support of BTS (방탄소년단)‘s SUGA (Min Yoongi), whose generosity has helped bring greater awareness to the importance of creating inclusive opportunities for individuals with autism.

For more than a decade, KASEC has believed that basketball is about much more than the game itself. It can help build friendships, confidence, strengthen communication skills, and create a true sense of belonging.

기쁜 소식을 전합니다!

KASEC이 개발한 통합농구 프로그램 모델인 DRIB(Developing Relationships in Inclusive Basketball) 모델을 기반으로 세브란스병원 민윤기치료센터에서 자페스펙트럼 청소년을 위한 농구 치료 프로그램 ‘MIND-PLAY’가 시작되었습니다.

KASEC은 최근 국제학술지 ‘Research in Autism’에 발표한 혼합연구에서 통합농구 프로그램이 자폐스펙트럼장애인의 사회성 향상과 신체-정서적 건강 증진에 기여할 수 있음을 보여주는 근거를 제시했으며, 미국의 자폐 연구 및 교육 기관인 Organization for Autism Research(OAR)의 연구 지원을 통해 DRIB Manual과 Toolkit을 개발하였습니다.

KASEC은 DRIB 모델을 개발한 이후, 세브란스 의료진을 대상으로 직접 교육과 프로그램 운영 노하우를 공유하며 한국에서도 성공적으로 운영될 수 있도록 함께 준비했습니다. 그리고 그 협력의 결실로 한국의 의료 환경에 맞춘 MIND-PLAY 프로그램이 새롭게 시작되었습니다.

이 과정은 단순히 프로그램 하나를 전달한 것이 아니라, 서로의 경험과 전문성을 나누고 함께 성장하며 새로운 가능성을 만들어낸 의미 있는 국제 협력이었습니다.

특히 이번 프로젝트는 BTS 슈가(민윤기) 님의 따뜻한 제안과 지원으로 시작되어 더욱 많은 발달장애인과 가족들에게 희망을 전하고 있습니다.

KASEC은 지난 10여 년 동안 농구를 통해 발달장애인이 친구를 만나고, 자신감을 키우며, 지역사회 안에서 함께 살아갈 수 있도록 노력해 왔습니다.

우리가 믿어온 가치와 프로그램이 국경을 넘어 또 다른 곳에서 새로운 변화를 만들어가고 있다는 사실에 큰 보람을 느낍니다.

앞으로도 KASEC은 더 많은 기관과 협력하며 발달장애인을 위한 좋은 프로그램을 나누고, 더 많은 사람들이 함께 살아가는 포용적인 사회를 만들어 가겠습니다.
